Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) conferred Honorary University Fellowships on seven distinguished persons at its 51st Convocation today (5 September), the first time such distinctions have been awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to the community and to the University. Some 1,400 freshmen and 184 exchange students were among the congregation for the "51st Convocation and Conferment of Honorary University Fellowships". In a ceremony presided over by Mr. Wilfred Wong, Deputy Chairman of the University Council and of the Court, Fellowships were presented to Mr. Bernard Fung ( 馮燊均先生 ), Managing Director of Kwong Yee Wo Shipyard Company Ltd.; Mrs. Amelia Lee ( 李吳劍鳴女士 ), Patron of Wofoo Foundation; Dr. Stephen Riady ( 李宗博士 ), Deputy Chairman of the Lippo Group; Ms. Tsar Teh-yun ( 蔡德允女士 ), renowned musician and art educator; Mr. Wong Kam-fai ( 王錦輝先生 ), Group Chairman of the Kum Shing Group; Dr. Lawrence Yick ( 易嘉濂博士 ), General Secretary of The Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong; and Dr. Yip Wai-hong ( 葉惠康博士 ), renowned music educator. In a speech, Professor Ng Ching-fai, President & Vice-Chancellor, said the Fellowships were being introduced on the joyous occasion of HKBU's 50th Anniversary. Addressing the newly enrolled students, he encouraged them to seek wisdom from the role models set by the Honorary Fellows and to begin to consider the obligations a university student owes to society. Professor Ng said one of the objectives behind the creation of the Fellowships was to reinforce the networking opportunities inherent in the extended family of the Baptist University, further boosting the University's efforts to realise its full potential in its further development. "All our Honorary University Fellows have built up a profound friendship and close involvement with the Baptist University, and they will certainly contribute more as they become part of us," he added. Professor Ng hoped that in the next three years, the sense of pride the students felt today would be sublimated to a sense of mission, so that through their selfless efforts they can advance the well-being of the community and mankind. He encouraged them to make good use of the precious opportunities and facilities offered by the University so that they would not leave this treasure trove of knowledge empty-handed. "As adults you should take a proactive role in acquiring knowledge, and build up a sound and sure foundation for your life in the future,” said Professor Ng. “I also hope that you may savour the genuine pleasure of learning by means of the flexible and liberal mode of learning employed in the University." On behalf of the Fellows, Dr. Yip Wai-hong gave thanks to the University for bestowing this distinction. Dr. Yip said the seven recipients came from different callings and social backgrounds. However, they were united in a common desire–to recognise and support HKBU's philosophy of education, which has whole person education as its guiding light. Dr. Yip said that in the past the Fellows had devoted themselves, each according to their resources, to giving selfless and passionate support for the University, since they admired the institution's achievements and its innovative endeavours. "The seven Honorary University Fellows elevated by the University today would like to pledge our continued support to HKBU," said Dr. Yip. He added that it was their earnest hope that the University would, amidst the social changes lying ahead, continue steadfastly to implement innovative measures in order to meet new challenges and achieve ever greater accomplishments for the further edification of young people. |
